Antifungal Activity of Acetylated 1,4-Naphthoquinone Thioglycosides

The fungicidal activity of seven acetylated thioglycosides of 1,4-naphthoquinone on Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger fungal strains was studied in comparison with nitrofungin. It was found that the most active drug 2-(tetra-O-acetyl-D-glucopyranosyl-1-thio)-3-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone at a concentration of 2 mg/ml was 1.6 times less active than nitrofungin against A. niger. The antifungal activity depended on the structure of the carbohydrate residue and the nature of the substituents in the quinoid nucleus of the thioglycosides.
