摘要

This retrospective study involves a latent profile analysis of NEO Personality Inventory – Revised (NEO PI-R) facet typologies associated with long-term commitment to the priestly vocation. The research was based on a chart review of 121 men who were admitted to a Canadian Catholic seminary between 1992 and 2012. Commitment was defined as whether seminarians were still practicing as priests in 2021 following their graduation from theology studies and ordination. They were required to answer the NEO PI-R as part of the customary psychological evaluation required of seminary entrants. The results clearly showed that entrants were described by the two NEO PI-R facet profiles labelled Seeker and Organizer. Differences in individual facet strengths within the two profiles were analyzed with t-tests for significance and Cohen’s d for effect size. The group who was still practicing as priests in 2021 was 3.8 times more likely to have an Organizer than a Seeker profile. The connection of these findings with intrinsic religiosity, passion, and resilience is discussed.
