<p>In the fast-growing urbanization, University campuses are known to serve as important green spaces in urban environments that enhance the overall biodiversity of the area. In that context, the present study was conducted to explore the avifauna diversity of the Central University of South Bihar (CUSB) located in Gaya, Bihar, India. Systematic surveys were carried out from December 2022 to December 2023. We reported 81 bird species, belonging to 18 orders and 45 families, which represent 85–95% of the species diversity on campus as per the rarefaction-based species richness curve. Birds belonging to the order Passeriformes were the highest (37 species). Based on the frequency of occurrence during the survey, 7 species were abundant (90–100%), 19 species were common (60–90%), 19 species were uncommon (20–60%), and 36 species were rare (&lt; 20%). The Shannon-Weiner Species Diversity Index was 3.45, and analysis of relative diversity (RDi) indicated that the family Muscicapidae (RDi: 9.8) was the most diverse on the campus. Of the birds on the campus, the Pallid harrier was of ‘Near Threatened (NT)’ status, while the rest all fell under the ‘Least Concern (LC)’ category of the IUCN Red List. Four observed species were listed in the Schedule-I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act, 2022. The bird species observed at CUSB represent a remarkable 53% of the total recorded species in Gaya, 23% of Bihar’s, and 6% of India’s total bird species. This high level of avian richness underscores the ecological value of the CUSB campus, making it a suitable habitat for birds and highlighting the important role of such academic campuses in bird conservation.</p>
