Induced surficial silver nanoparticles by nanosecond Excimer laser irradiation on different substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy applications

In the paper, surficial Ag NPs are produced using irradiation of excimer laser pulses on Ag films deposited on two different substrates (Polycarbonate and BK7) in the applied/not applied external field conditions. The results highlight the importance of substrate selection and external electrical field on the density and uniformity of the formed surficial silver nanoparticles. Spherical Ag NPs are formed in all produced samples, but the average diameters of NPs range from 23 to 39 nm with the change in the parameters. Also, producing the Ag NPs by pulsed laser ablation on silver films deposited on BK7 requires more laser fluence (more than 50%) than that of the polycarbonate substrate. Although the pertly high localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption peak can be observed in the Ag samples produced on BK7, the LSPR peak heights of Ag samples produced on polycarbonate are significantly higher. The studies on the efficiencies of the samples for employing as tools for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and plasmon-enhanced fluorescence underscore the high potential of surficial silver NPs produced on polycarbonate substrates for efficient SERS applications and enhanced fluorescence.
