Research on individual differences in risk preferences for personnel evacuation during flood disasters in underground spaces

Emergency evacuation in flooded metro stations poses significant challenges due to the low-lying terrain and complex structures. However, few studies pay attention to the evacuees’ heterogeneity in risk preferences in urban underground space during flooding disaster. This study aims to investigate the risk preferences and decision-making behaviors of individuals in urban underground spaces during flooding disasters. A flood evacuation experiment was conducted using the E-prime platform, supplemented by a questionnaire to classify participants based on their risk preferences. A random logit model was developed, accounting for pedestrian heterogeneity, to describe the evacuation path selection probabilities of individuals with different risk preferences. The results indicated that participants could be categorized into two groups: Risk Averters (RA, 77.14%) and Risk Seekers (RS, 22.86%), based on their path selection behavior. Risk Averters' decisions were significantly influenced by PEOPLE, SIGN, and WATER factors (p < 0.001), whereas for Risk Seekers, PEOPLE and WATER had a limited impact (p > 0.05) compared to SIGN. A statistically significant difference (p = 0.013) in spatial navigation ability was also observed between the two groups. Additionally, a notable difference (p = 0.18) in decision-making duration was identified: for medium- and high-risk paths, Risk Averters took significantly longer to make decisions compared to Risk Seekers. Moreover, females made 404.5ms faster decisions than males when selecting evacuation routes. This study provides knowledge on how environmental and subjective characteristics affect the risk preference and path selection during flooding evacuation.
