The effect of big five personality traits of prospective disaster risk managers on individual disaster resilience

This study aims to investigate the effect of the big five personality traits of prospective disaster risk managers on their individual disaster resilience. This study was conducted using a correlational research design. 200 students studying at state and foundation universities between April and May 2024 participated in the study. Personal Information Form, Five Factor Personality Inventory and Individual Disaster Resilience Scale were used as data collection tools. The data from the study were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling. The results of the study revealed that the personality traits of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness to development have a significant and positive effect on individual disaster resilience. On the other hand, the sub-dimension of neuroticism was found to have a significant but negative effect on individual disaster resilience; individual disaster resilience was found to decrease as neuroticism increased. It was concluded that this study highlights the importance of personality traits for disaster management and psychological support practices. Accordingly, it was suggested that further research should focus on programmes that prioritise stress management and psychological therapy programmes, particularly for individuals with high levels of neuroticism, as well as disaster awareness and preparedness training for the general population.
