The Society-Economy-Ecology Nexus: Network Analysis of High-Quality Development in China's Provinces
摘要
High-quality development (HQD) represents a vital strategic objective for China, aimed at maintaining social stability, improving people's well-being, driving industrial upgrading and economic transformation, and achieving ecological balance and sustainable green development. This study evaluates the HQD performance of 30 Chinese provinces from the perspectives of society, economy, and ecology. Based on the coupling coordination degrees across these three dimensions, we construct provincial HQD networks over the period from 2012 to 2022. Social network analysis (SNA) is applied to uncover the structural features of the network, while temporal exponential random graph models (TERGMs) are utilized to investigate its temporal evolution mechanisms and influencing factors. The findings indicate that: (1) Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang continue to lead in HQD, with coastal provinces demonstrating advantages in coordinating social, economic, and ecological development. (2) Central China has gradually improved its development level, while western and northeastern regions face resource and geographical challenges but still hold significant potential. (3) The Eastern Core Cooperative Community mainly operates through internal cooperation, the Economic Hub and Radiation Community interacts frequently with other regions, the Southwest Collaborative Development Community strengthens both internal and external cooperation, and the Northwest Independent Balance Community maintains a stable, independent development model. (4) Interprovincial cooperation follows diverse patterns, with a bidirectional collaborative triangular structure playing a dominant role. The HQD networks demonstrate significant stability and continuity, with transportation, commerce, and geographical proximity being key drivers of network development. This study offers novel insights and empirical evidence for understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics of China's provincial HQD network, providing valuable guidance for the government in devising region-specific development policies.
