<p>As a mainstream author, Pierre Lemaitre is very interested in how his novels are received and understood by his readers, whom he considers part of a narrative convention, a contract he has made with them. The aim of this study, limited to the volumes of the trilogy&#xa0;<i>Les enfants du désastre</i> (2013–2020), is to analyse how Lemaitre proceeds to realise this convention by using what he calls, in the wake of Roman Jakobson's terminology, the "phatic function of language".</p>
