<p>Robert Menasse is one of the Austrian novelists and essayists who have expressed deep concern about Europe’s status quo and future. In his novel <i>Die Erweiterung</i> (2022), he shares his trenchant critique of the European Union’s (EU) volatility in enlargement and integration as well as his anxiety about the hindrance posed by nationalism and populism in European countries on Europe’s common development. With more than 100 figures who are closely or loosely connected, <i>Die Erweiterung</i> reflects Menasse’s fundamental perception of European countries: their past is interconnected, and their long-term development is impossible without cooperation and, when necessary, concession. Unfortunately, the previous decades have witnessed enormous waves of populism in Europe, while European heads of government and officials at the European Commission have been preoccupied with national interests and individual gains. As a result, only a few of them have upheld EU’s mission of overcoming geopolitical, economic, and cultural barriers for a common prosperous market and sustainable society in Europe.</p>

Robert Menasse is one of the Austrian novelists and essayists who have expressed deep concern about Europe’s status quo and future. In his novel Die Erweiterung (2022), he shares his trenchant critique of the European Union’s (EU) volatility in enlargement and integration as well as his anxiety about the hindrance posed by nationalism and populism in European countries on Europe’s common development.
