The opposite of humanity: the unnatural narrator in the covert progression of Through the Arc of the Rain Forest
摘要
This paper employs the lens of unnatural narratology to conduct a meticulous examination of the character-narrator, the ball, in Karen Tei Yamashita’s novel Through the Arc of the Rain Forest. By scrutinizing the unnatural elements embodied by the bizarre ball, this study unveils a rupture in its narratorial reliability, thereby inviting a reevaluation of its narration. Through this process, many seemingly peripheral or digressive textual details within the surface plot acquire profound meanings, converging to reveal the covert progression of the ball’s vengeful odyssey. The discovery of this underlying trajectory presents a contradictory portrayal of the ball, highlighting the agency of the opposite of humanity, namely all non-human entities represented by the ball, and providing readers with an opportunity to reorient themselves within an intricate cognitive projection. This paper pioneers a dialogue between critical perspectives in unnatural narratology and covert progression, demonstrating their effective synergy in exploring the intricate web of meanings woven into the story.
