Sleep Disturbances in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Possible Mechanisms and Main Approaches to Treatment
摘要
This review summarizes results from sleep studies in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In particular, it addresses the specific features of nightmares and other sleep disturbances characteristic of this disorder. Hypothetical mechanisms of disruption of the adaptive function of dreams and sleep-dependent reconsolidation of emotional memory in PTSD are considered. The diagnostic significance of dreams during the acute post-traumatic period is discussed. Contemporary methodological approaches to the treatment of PTSD and associated insomnia and nightmares are presented.
