<p>Numerous studies have established a link between Parkinson’s disease and low uric acid levels. Low uric acid levels are associated with an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, its progression, and the severity of symptoms. Although the biological mechanisms of this relationship remain to be established, uric acid is believed to act as an antioxidant, reducing oxidative stress and protecting dopaminergic neurons. However, some recent studies have questioned this hypothesis. This article discusses the biological properties of uric acid, its links to Parkinson’s disease, and the possibility of reverse causality – whereby it is the disease that causes the low uric acid levels. The data presented here will encourage further research to seek a thorough understanding of these links, which may underlie new approaches to treating the disease.</p>
