Impaired Time Perception in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Objective. To study time perception in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and to evaluate the efficacy of Pantogam in relation to both the main symptoms of the disease and disturbances in the perception of time intervals. Material and methods. The study included 86 children with ADHD aged 10–13 years. The study group included 56 children with the combined type of ADHD (ADHD-C) and 30 children with predominantly inattention without hyperactivity (attention deficit disorder, ADD). The control group consisted of 30 children aged 10–13 years without psychoneurological disorders. The following research methods were used in the study: the SNAP-IV questionnaire for quantitative assessment of the signs of ADHD, the Working Memory method for assessing working memory, tasks for estimating and measuring time intervals, and a study using the Subjective Minute method for assessing disturbances in the perception of temporal intervals. Pantogam was given at a dose of 750 mg per day for eight weeks. Results. SNAP-IV scale assessment showed that the level of inattention in the study groups was significantly greater than the level of inattention in the control group, while levels of hyperactivity and impulsivity were significantly greater in children with ADHD-C compared to the ADHD group and the control group. Assessment of working memory revealed significant decreases in the level of this indicator in children with both types of ADHD as compared with the control group. Difficulties with time management, as assessed by parents, were noted in 88.4% of children in the study group and 36.7% of children in the control group. These impairments were particularly marked in tasks requiring sustained attention (96.4% of children with ADHD-C and 73.3% of children with ADD). In ADHD-C, tachychrony was more pronounced, while patients with ADD were characterized by overestimation of elapsed time. After eight weeks of treatment with Pantogam, improvements in the form of a reliable decrease in inattention and impulsivity and in working memory were recorded in 55.4% of cases in the group of patients with ADHD-C. Improvements in time perception were also noted. Conclusions. The study confirmed that in addition to the main symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity), children with ADHD often experience significant problems with time management and that the normalizing effect of drugs for the treatment of ADHD is apparent not only in relation to the main symptoms of the disease, but also in relation to the perception of time.
