<p>Insomnia is a common disorder in the general population and is associated with numerous social and medical consequences. Insomnia can be both a distinct clinical syndrome and a symptom of many mental disorders and can increase the severity of the underlying disorder and the risk of relapse. Certain medications can also cause insomnia. Prompt treatment of insomnia can lead to positive outcomes (recovery) not only by alleviating the symptoms of the underlying mental disorder but also by preventing new episodes. Thus, it is crucial to understand the relationship between insomnia and mental illness. This review examines this relationship and provides recommendations for diagnosis and treatment.</p>
