Abnormalities in EEG microstates among individuals with major depression and obsessive–compulsive disorder

Electroencephalogram (EEG) microstate analysis provides insight into the rapid dynamics of large-scale brain networks, with alterations in microstates linked to psychiatric conditions such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD). Although MDD and OCD frequently co-occur and share overlapping symptoms, their treatment strategies often differ. This study investigates microstate patterns in individuals with OCD, MDD, and healthy controls to elucidate the distinct neural mechanisms underlying these disorders. Resting-state EEG data were acquired from 32 MDD patients, 26 OCD patients, and 40 healthy controls. The analysis revealed that microstate C exhibited significantly greater duration, occurrence, and coverage in the OCD group compared to the MDD group. In contrast, microstate D demonstrated reduced duration and coverage in OCD relative to both MDD and controls. The findings indicate that microstates C and D are significant discriminative features in OCD.
