A Pilot fMRI-EEG Study of Tantric Meditation in Tibetan Monks

The objective of this pilot study was to investigate the functional activity and connectivity of the brain using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) in Tibetan monks during meditation. Three monks took part in the experiment, two of whom completed two meditation sessions. Analysis of the data revealed changes in the connectivity of the default mode network, the salience network, and the sensorimotor network, along with an increase in the EEG α rhythm and a decrease in the EEG δ rhythm during meditation as compared with rest. Combined fMRI-EEG analysis revealed a relationship between the functional activity of the brain and changes in the α and δ rhythms. These results confirm that meditation has a systemic effect on brain function, contributing to changes in its functional organization, and may be important for the development of new approaches to cognitive and emotional self-regulation.
