<p>We report here the use of psychophysiological testing of the previously developed expanded Russian-language modification of the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET), a psychological test for assessing the cerebral support of the affective component of the mentalization process, by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The main analysis included fMRI data for 40 subjects (mean age 22.5 ± 3.2 years, 13 men and 27 women). A reproducible RMET-associated increase in the level of local activity compared with the control condition (recognition of age) was established for a number of human brain structures which previous studies had shown to be involved in supporting processes for identifying emotional states from eye expressions, including the inferior frontal gyrus, supplementary motor cortex of both hemispheres, left precentral gyrus, and right middle/superior temporal gyrus. In addition, new data were obtained on the involvement of the cerebellum and thalamus in supporting the processes of reading the emotional expressions of the eyes in comparison with the process of identifying age when performing the RMET task, which has previously been mentioned only in isolated studies. Furthermore, new effects resulting from changes in the level of local activity in the conditions of the RMET task were found, clarifying the nature of the involvement of the medial prefrontal cortex, precuneus, left angular gyrus, and left middle/superior temporal gyrus of the human brain in supporting recognition of the internal affective mental states of another person. Thus, the results of the fMRI study not only successfully tested an extended version of the Russian-language RMET task, but also captured new data which expand our understanding of the set of brain structures associated with the affective aspect of processes associated with mentalization.</p>
