Studies of the Possible Involvement of the Deprivation Potentiation Mechanism in Memory Consolidation during Sleep

We report here a study testing the hypothesis regarding the involvement of the mechanism of deprivation potentiation, which develops during prolonged synaptic rest, in memory consolidation while animals rest/sleep after one-day training in a water maze, using pharmacological, genetic, and electrophysiological factors interfering with its development. The animals’ ability to retain the acquired skill was tested (consolidation test) at seven days. The experiments did not confirm the suggestion that the deprivation potentiation mechanism is involved in memory consolidation, but at the same time demonstrated that mice with knockout of the pannexin 1 gene retain the ability for spatial learning and long-term retention of the skill.
