Variability of the Boundaries of Semantic Priming: The Role of the Informativeness of Primes

The objective of this study was to determine which of the theories, inhibition or episode retrieval, is more relevant for recently learned semantic pairs. At the memorization stage, 34 study participants were presented with pseudowords with semantic binding in the form of images of unknown fruits. At the test stage, a semantic priming procedure was used with a color solution task, where in 50% of cases targets were images of fruits and primes were their names (pseudowords); in the other 50%, conversely, the targets were names and the primes were images. The congruence of the primes (congruence and incongruence of the image and its learned name) was also varied. Eye movement activity was recorded in parallel. Positive priming was found for image primes in congruent conditions and negative priming was found for word primes regardless of their congruence. These results did not favor either of the theories, although, having demonstrated an expansion of the boundaries of the negative priming effect, they showed the ability of the cognitive system to switch flexibly between more general and more specific levels of processing depending on the characteristics of the stimuli.
