<p>Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder whose etiology and pathogenesis are significantly influenced by hereditary factors. Genome-wide association studies have shown that most genetic variants associated with high risk of schizophrenia are located in the regulatory regions of genes. This brief review presents data on the general structure of the major regulatory regions of genes, focusing on enhancers, i.e., regions of the genome which enhance gene activity. The involvement of transcription factors interacting with the regulatory regions of genes in various molecular and cellular processes whose disruption is associated with the pathogenesis of schizophrenia is considered in detail.</p>
