<p>This paper presents a study of the effects of sensory-cognitive exercises on measures of perception, attention, and memory in elderly and old individuals [Translator’s note: the Russian terms here translated as <i>elderly</i> and <i>old</i> correspond to ages 61–75 years and 76–90 years respectively]. The experimental group included 16 elderly and old volunteer subjects (mean age 73 ± 1.7 years) with no history of significant age-related sensory or neurological problems (questionnaire data). All subjects underwent a four-week course of sensory-cognitive exercises, along with psychophysical testing and assessment of psychological health resources before and after the classes. Significant improvements in the target sensory-cognitive measures (perception, attention, memory) were demonstrated in the study group, and the dynamics of a number of individual psychological characteristics (anxiety, hierarchy in the value system, resilience, and cheerfulness) are presented. The results lead to the conclusion that the course of sensory-cognitive exercises contributed to actualization of both the potential of sensory-cognitive processes and the psychological health resources of elderly people. This indicates the prophylactic value of functional training in the context of reducing the age-related risks of dementia and achieving the goals of active longevity.</p>
