Interaction of Cortricotropin-Releasing Hormone and Capsaicin-Sensitive Afferent Neurons in Gastroprotection

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons with efferent-like function (CSN) make important contributions to the regulation of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) functions and gastroprotection. The objective of this review was to analyze published data, including the results of our own research, on the interaction of CRH and CSN in providing gastroprotection and in the regulation of GIT functions, with a focus on the most studied interaction – the regulation of GIT motor function. Based on our own research data, we discuss the possibility that CSN contribute to mediating the gastroprotective effect of CRH and, conversely, the possibility that CRH has a role in ensuring the gastroprotective effect of capsaicin, which activates CSN. The contributions of glucocorticoid hormones to mediating the gastroprotective actions of CRH and the compensatory gastroprotective role of these hormones in conditions of functional exclusion of CSN are considered.
