摘要

Watersheds deliver various ecosystem services and represent natural units of social–ecological systems. Disruptions to a watershed's structure and resources can lead to the collapse of its ecosystem. Watershed stability (WS) and its functioning are crucial factors in global sustainable development. Hence, it is essential to consider protecting the integrity and maintenance of WS. However, a comprehensive, integrated, and holistic analysis has yet to be conducted to conceptualize WS and understand the interdependency of its determinant factors. This paper provides a bibliometric overview of WS and its application to similar concepts of WS. To achieve this, we reviewed the literature using the Web of Science (WoS) database from 1994 to 2024. From 1034 publications, 706 articles were selected to identify keywords, leading authors, co-citations, countries, principal journals, and central themes using the VOSviewer analytic tool. Three main thematic clusters were identified from the visualization, including (1) stability of climate change variables, (2) biodiversity and community stability, and (3) hydrological stability, such as river and water quality parameters. Besides, China is the leading country in this area, with 375 documents. The 2016–2024 period exhibited rapid growth, with 2023 recording the highest number of publications, surpassing 120 papers. One gap in this work is that there is no direct study investigating the effect of socioeconomic aspects on WS, and the findings are exclusively based on the WoS database. This study identified gaps and promising areas for further research in WS to enhance ecosystem sustainability.
