Selection of Basalt Fiber Raw Materials from an Improved Empirical Correlation

To select proper raw material for basalt fiber, an improved correlation between melt viscosity (lgη) and depolymerization level (NBO/T) was proposed in previous research. An empirical fiber formation zone was identified in a binary diagram of the above factors, from which three representative raw materials were adjusted and evaluated by fiber drawing methods. Monofilament drawing process confirmed the feasibility of the correlation, and further analysis of the fibers indicated there was no gradual tendency between the depolymerization level and fiber performances. Based on comprehensive considerations of the forming and mechanical properties of the fiber (especially tensile strength), the recommended optimized raw material is XWY-B (NBO/T = 0.43, lgη = 1.03). To produce high quality fiber, the strategy of sizing with water or agent during spinning is an effective way. The existence of nano-crystals in basalt fibers was established by transmission electron microscopy. Above all, this work presents a method to select raw materials for basalt fibers.
