摘要

Carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNs) have drawn a lot of attention due to their distinct physical and chemical properties. CBNs, such as fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, carbon quantum dots, graphene, and other derivatives have been thoroughly investigated in environmental remediation, analytical chemistry and sensing, antimicrobial activities, microbial fuel cells, and renewable energy and energy storage. In this study, recent researches on the synthesis, properties, and application of CBNs were detailed, including the toxicity and health implications of CBNs. Conclusively, the various uses of CBNs have shown an exciting result for many applications. However, there are still concerns about some restrictions, including the lack of knowledge on the possible toxicity and health effects of CBNs, difficulties with scalability and cost-effectiveness, and biocompatibility in medical applications; thus, further research is needed to involve the multidisciplinary integration approaches, including Engineering, Medicine, Chemistry, Biology, and Material Science, to open the full potential of CBNs and to further encourage scientists to produce innovative CBNs for usage in a variety of sectors.
