<p>Game development is a highly competitive, multi-billion-dollar industry that depends on delivering seamless user experiences. However, game-breaking bugs often disrupt gameplay, reducing player satisfaction. This study introduces a human-centered video game bug taxonomy (VGBT) designed to improve usability and user experience in game development. By categorizing bugs from the player’s perspective, this taxonomy helps developers create more robust games and assists testers in designing better bug detection strategies. We conducted a Multivocal Literature Review (MLR) of 436 sources, identifying 63 bug categories, including eight key types: Game Balance, Implementation Response, Network, Sound, Temporal, Crashes, Navigation, and Non-Temporal issues. To ensure real-world relevance, we validated VGBT through a survey of 168 game developers, testers, and players, analyzing bug frequency, severity, and priority from an end-user perspective. The results show that all identified categories hold practical value and reveal gaps in current testing practices–particularly in areas such as sound and balance faults. Additionally, we applied the taxonomy to a set of 594 bug reports from the community-developed game 0 A.D. to assess its applicability in classifying real-world, player-submitted issues. We also map VGBT to ISO/IEC 25010, IEEE 1044, and the ISTQB CT-GaMe syllabus to position it within established quality models, anomaly classification standards, and testing practices. By providing a structured framework, VGBT supports more consistent bug reporting, especially in early access and playtesting contexts, and offers a foundation for future testing workflows that incorporate both human-centered practices and automated techniques.</p>
