Deep learning based skin cancer detection enhanced by modified attention mechanisms
摘要
Skin cancer remains the most popular and potentially deadly form of cancer, necessitating early and accurate detection for effective treatment. In this study, a deep learning approach was presented for a skin cancer detection system with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) augmented with modified attention mechanisms. Attention Mechanisms develop methods to visualize and interpret attention maps to understand how the model focuses on different regions of the image. Traditional CNNs, while powerful, often lack the nuanced focus needed to identify subtle variations in dermoscopic images indicative of skin cancer. To address this limitation, this system introduces a novel attention mechanism that dynamically emphasizes critical features within the image, thereby improving diagnostic accuracy. The proposed model underwent training and validation on a comprehensive dataset of labeled skin lesion images encompassing various types of skin cancer. The enhanced attention mechanism enables the network to selectively prioritize relevant regions of the image, facilitating more precise differentiation between benign and malignant lesions. Comparative analysis demonstrates that this proposed approach outperforms standard CNN architectures, achieving higher accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. The results indicate that incorporating modified attention mechanisms into CNNs significantly enhances their performance in skin cancer detection. This advancement holds promise for integrating deep learning-based diagnostic tools into clinical practice, potentially leading to earlier detection and better patient outcomes. The main goals for a deep learning-based skin cancer detection system enhanced by modified attention mechanisms are centered around improving diagnostic accuracy, enhancing feature representation, ensuring real-time detection, reducing errors, maintaining generalizability, facilitating clinical integration, providing interpretability, ensuring scalability, and enabling continuous improvement.
