The Motivated Chatterbox: Examining the Motives of Goal Sharing
摘要
Across six studies, we examined the motives that drive individuals to communicate their goals with others (i.e., goal sharing). Using a new scale constructed across two preliminary studies, Study 1 examined the multidimensional and hierarchical structure of goal-sharing motives and demonstrated its consistency across different cultures. Study 2 found that the motives uniquely predicted goal-sharing intentions and behavior beyond related constructs. Employing longitudinal designs, Studies 3 and 4 ascertained the temporal stability of goal-sharing motives and established its predictive utility in different domains. Furthermore, Study 4 explored the downstream implications of goal-sharing motives and behavior: goal-sharing motives predicted achievement and life satisfaction through goal sharing. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed. Our research elucidates the structure and predictive utility of goal-sharing motives, opening new avenues for studying social influence in goal pursuit.
