<p>Prominent theories of extraversion link it to reward sensitivity, incentive motivation, or the behavioral activation system. Such theories should predict that extraverts, relative to introverts, should exhibit stronger reactions to reward-related stimuli. Evidence for links of this type, typically obtained from mood induction studies, has been mixed, but mood induction studies are likely insensitive to real-time components of reactivity. The present two studies (total <i>N</i> = 266) therefore examined potential links between variations in extraversion and dynamic emotional responding to appetitive versus aversive images. In normative terms, negative emotional reactions were easier to identify, began more quickly, reached higher peak amplitudes, and exhibited greater prototypicality. These negativity effects were attenuated or reversed at higher levels of extraversion. The results are consistent with theoretical frameworks for extraversion that emphasize reward-related processing and they provide new data concerning components of emotional reactivity that have received limited attention.</p>
