Effect of Fiber Orientations on Bearing Strength of Laminated Jute Fiber-Reinforced Polyester Composites

The bearing strength of laminated natural fiber-reinforced polymer (NFRP) composites and the effects of fiber orientation on the bearing strength and failure mode were studied. In this regard, jute fiber-reinforced laminated polyester (JFRLP) composites with fiber layups of [90/0/90], [0/90/0], and [45/90/–45] were fabricated by hand lay-up methods. Their bearing strengths were evaluated as per ASTM D-5961 standards. A single-bolted double-shear joint and gripper were designed to apply in-plane shear load to the joint during testing. This study revealed that fiber orientation significantly affects the bearing strength of NRFP composites. Bearing strengths of JFRLP composites were found to be 115, 93, and 89 MPa for [0/90/0], [45/90/–45], and [90/0/90] layups, respectively. The bearing strength was compared with other natural and synthetic fiber-reinforced composites, and the failure mode of joints was validated through the tensile strength of composites available in the literature. This study will aid in evaluating the bearing strength of other NFRP composites, designing joints, predicting joint strength, and ensuring composites structural integrity and suitable applications.
