Mechanical Properties of Raw Jute and Coir Fiber-Reinforced Polyester Composites Through Fiber Orientation: A Study on Tensile, Impact, and Hardness Characteristics
摘要
This study aims to improve the mechanical characteristics of untreated jute and coir fiber-reinforced polyester resin composites with various fiber orientations relative to the force direction. Composite sheets were prepared by varying the fiber orientation directions — 90°, 90°/0°, and 90°/0°/45°. The mechanical properties (tensile strength, impact strength, and hardness) of the fabricated composites were investigated, and structural characterization was carried out using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The experiment demonstrates improved fiber reinforcement in polyester resin, creating potential for low load-bearing applications. The coir reinforced polyester composite (CRPC) with [90/0/45] layup exhibited the highest tensile strength of 34 MPa and the highest impact strength of 2.30 J. The jute reinforced polyester composite (JRPC) with layup [90/0] displayed superior hardness of 77.5 RHN. Both hardness and impact strength were better for JRPC ([90/0]) and CRPC ([90/0]). Additionally, CRPC ([90]) excelled in impact and tensile strength. JRPC ([90/0/45]) and CRPC ([90/0]) showed higher tensile and hardness values. Overall, in terms of tensile strength, hardness, and impact strength, JRPC and CRPC at ([90/0]) performed exceptionally well in 100% polyester resin.
