A sustainable biochar system to significantly reduce global greenhouse gas emissions

Global warming is posing a great threat to the natural environment and societies around the world and, thus, controlling CO2 emissions and achieving carbon neutrality have become urgent matters. To this end, we developed an efficient carbon removal system—a forest biochar recycling system—by combining pyrolysis conversion, soil carbon sequestration, and photosynthesis to assess the positive impacts of biochar in global climate change as well as its sustainability. Our results show that a globally sustainable biochar system application can reduce CO2 emissions by 5.67% per year, with a cumulative 100-year net emission reduction of 142450.63 Mt CO2-eq, and that emission reductions from this system are highly positively correlated with forest area. Sustainable forest biochar recycling systems have a greater potential to mitigate CO2 emissions than biochar used as an energy source. The huge emission reduction potential of this system offers the possibility of achieving the Paris Agreement target of limiting warming to 2 °C by 2030.
