Effect of screw piercing on the structure and mechanical properties of a continuously cast blank made of wheel steel

In this paper, the results of the study on the deformation effect by the screw piercing method on the mechanical properties and macrostructure of a continuously cast blank made of wheel steel are presented. It is revealed that when piercing in a screw rolling mill with small extraction coefficients of the billet (feed angle β = 14°, extraction coefficient μ ~ 1.36), the quality of the macrostructure improves, the strength properties (σv, σ0.2) increase by 1.1–1.6 times, the plastic properties (δ, ψ) improve by 1.4–5.4 times, and the impact strength of the wheel steel increases.
