Numerical analysis of lubrication properties on a bio-inspired parabolic textured surface

摘要

This study proposed a unique texture type with parabolic grooves inspired by the parabolic grooves on the surface of a cuttlebone to improve the load-carrying capacity of lubricated sliding bearings. A hydrodynamic lubrication model was used to systematically analyze the effect of parabolic groove parameters on the lubrication properties. The load-carrying capacity of the grooved texture was determined by a precise balance between hydrodynamics and cavitation effects. Parabolic grooves exhibited a higher load-carrying capacity than that of conventional straight grooves owing to the fluid collection effect of the parabolic shape texture and narrowing cavitation region around the divergent wedge; the optimal groove depth was typically in the range 5–7 μm. The load-carrying capacity increased at greater sliding velocities and thinner initial film. Consequently, this study provides valuable insights into a new shape configuration and design guidelines for surface texture in sliding bearings, offering potential advancements in the lubrication technology.
