<p>Kojève’s thought can be understood in part as the attempt to determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for the realization of Wisdom, in the Hegelian sense of Absolute Knowledge. The realization of Wisdom depends upon the demonstration of the possibility and necessity of Philosophy. In his unpublished and unfinished 1937 work “Identity and reality in Pierre Bayle’s ‘Dictionary’” Kojève confronts Bayle’s scepticism as a form of reason which denies the identity of Reason and Reality, and therefore the possibility of Philosophy itself. The work is important for understanding the development of Kojève’s thought and how he understood Reason and the form of scepticism that challenged the claims of Philosophy to give a coherent account of the Whole.</p>
