Anticancer Therapy Against Glioma by Peptide-Based Therapeutics

Glioma is a form of brain cancer which is not easily dealt with since it grows fast and can spread deep into the brain. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation may not be able to entirely eradicate the tumor and they may result into numerous side effects. A novel and potential method that has been suggested with regard to glioma therapy involves the use of a peptide based therapeutic.
ObjectiveThis review aims to comprehensively discuss about advanced therapeutic strategies for glioma by peptide-based therapeutics.
MethodologyLiterature survey was performed by taking articles from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. We have used “glioma”, “peptide”, “anticancer therapy” etc. keywords to find out suitable articles. Publications from the past 20 years were the main focus of selection, while some earlier, historically relevant materials were included.
ResultsGliomas are distinguished by their fast development, cellular invasiveness, and existence of the blood–brain barrier and blood–brain tumor barrier. Because of their high dosage requirements, ineffective cellular absorption, and poor cell selectivity, current delivery methods for cancer treatments frequently result in serious systemic adverse effects. These problems have been demonstrated to be mitigated by peptide-based delivery methods, which may also greatly improve therapeutic loading, delivery, and cancer targetability. It is possible to customize peptide systems for certain cancer applications.
ConclusionThe efforts and achievements in peptide-based treatment approaches and combination procedures with glioma therapy are described in this study. The design, properties, and uses of peptide nanoparticles are examined, along with peptide applications in the medical field.
