Was Boris Johnson right? (or how economic is your kettle?)
摘要
Three electric kettles were assessed for their energy efficiency by measuring their heating profiles with different amounts of water. This enabled the thermal mass of the vessel to be separated from the energy requirement to heat its contents. Cooling measurements were also carried out. A vacuum insulated kettle was found to be the most efficient. A similar procedure was carried out using a stovetop kettle on a gas hob. Ancillary studies were conducted using a resistively heated electric hob, an induction heated hob, an infrared hob as well as a microwave oven with the induction heated hob being almost as efficient as the electric kettle as heating its contents. Although the stovetop gas kettle was the least efficient means of boiling water, it was the cheapest in terms of initial outlay and operating costs. The latter is due to natural gas being approximately one quarter the cost of electricity for heating.
