<p>Conventional fuels have significant environmental effects, are limited in supply and cause huge import costs. They frequently come from conflict prone areas, escalating geopolitical tensions and endangering energy security. For reducing the harmful effects caused by fossil fuels and ensuring a sustainable future for coming generations, adoption of alternative and renewable energy sources is crucial. Biogas is a renewable source of energy that can be produced indefinitely from organic wastes without depleting finite crude resources. In general, biogas is an inexpensive, sustainable and ecologically beneficial alternative to traditional fuels. Additionally, it assists in the disposal of waste material, ensures energy security and emits fewer pollutants than conventional fuels. Waste management techniques that help lower greenhouse gas emissions and the risk of groundwater pollution are frequently associated with biogas production. This review work details about the social and economic benefits of biogas, various designs of biogas digesters commonly used, the various feedstocks used for biogas production; various techniques used for increasing the biogas yield, various techniques used for the removal of impurities from raw biogas thus achieving biogas enrichment, various compression techniques used for converting purified biogas into the compressed biogas (CBG), use of biogas for various applications particularly as an automotive engine fuel. This work also details about the challenges of using biogas as an engine fuel, the combustion strategies used with biogas, its use in SI and CI engine and the physical modifications required in existing engines for using biogas as fuel. Finally, it explores the possibility of CBG blending in CNG thus assisting in import minimization. Overall this work explores the production, purification and usage of biogas as an engine fuel with details of potential benefits achieved.</p>
