LR-115 passive nuclear track detectors for indoor radon-222 and thoron-220 concentration estimation: a systematic review (PRISMA) of physical foundations, calibration methodologies and dosimetric frameworks

This systematic review, carried out under the PRISMA 2020 protocol, examines the physical principles, calibration approaches and dosimetric frameworks that underpin the use of LR-115 type II passive nuclear track detectors for indoor radon-222 and thoron-220 measurement. Out of 847 records retrieved from five bibliographic databases and complementary institutional sources, 62 publications were included in the final synthesis. Twin-chamber configurations, etching kinetics, reported calibration factors and the UNSCEAR and ICRP dose conversion coefficients are critically compared. Twin-cup LR-115 dosimeters paired with traceable calibration emerge as a sound compromise between cost, sensitivity and radon/thoron discrimination for large residential surveys.
