Method development for the remote and non-destructive sampling of precious radioisotopes in closed containers using radiolanthanum as a surrogate

Certain historic samples are housed in small display containers that are not to be disturbed in order to ensure safety of the sample or the environment. However, performing isotopic measurements on these artifacts is of scientific value and therefore a nondestructive method in preparation of a future sampling is needed. A replica of a historical sample housing at UC Berkeley was constructed, and a series of evacuation and swipes tests were performed using neutron activated La2O3 powder as an easily measurable surrogate for a historical PuO2 powder. The 140La is safer to handle than plutonium isotopes and allows for sampling optimization tests. When the lid of the box was open, substantial releases and aerosolization of 140La were observed. With the lid closed, the release of 140La was still sufficient to suggest a successful sampling campaign.
