Tiny samples for neutron transmission experiments with the DICER instrument at LANSCE

Radiative neutron capture data targeted to nuclear security applications are essential, however, challenging to acquire for short-lived radionuclides. A technique has been recently developed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science CEnter (LANSCE), that can provide accurate data on a plethora of radionuclides relevant to nuclear criticality safety, radiochemical diagnostics, astrophysics, nuclear forensics and nuclear security, by performing neutron transmission measurements. The Device for Indirect Neutron Capture Experiments on Radionuclides (DICER) is a capability that was developed to address the aforementioned challenge. A first neutron transmission measurement was conducted recently at DICER using liquid 88Zr sample, for which 88Zr was produced at the Isotope Production Facility (IPF) at LANSCE. This measurement resulted in the discovery of a nuclear level near the neutron separation energy. Other efforts include the measurements of 239Pu and 88Y samples. Performing new measurements requires the development of a sample fabrication techniques which are not straightforward. A summary of the developments that took place over the last five years will be discussed.
