Humidity effects on HF generation and salt volatilization from fluoride molten salt spills in FHR accident scenarios

This study examined hydrogen fluoride generation and salt volatilization from a eutectic FLiNaZr (LiF-NaF-ZrF, 26.0-37.0-37.0 mol%) fluoride molten salt heated to 625 °C with surrogate fission products and uranium fuel. Air with varying water concentrations and flow rates passed through the reaction tube. Effluent gases were analyzed using quadrupole mass spectrometry and pH–stat titration. Volatilized salts were collected downstream in condensation tubes. Post-experiment ICP-MS analyses assessed fluoride hydrolysis and salt volatilization in recovered samples and condensates. Results demonstrated a direct, predictable correlation between water concentration and HF generation for a simulated spill from a fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactor.
