Mineral acid free extraction of uranium from geological samples using green solvents and its determination using ICP-OES

In this communication, we present our studies on extracting uranium from geological samples using green solvents specifically deep eutectic solvents (DES). We synthesized DES based on choline chloride (ChCl) and lactic acid (LA), which successfully achieved an extraction efficiency of uranium over 95%. We optimized various parameters for uranium recovery, including the molar ratios of ChCl to LA, contact time, temperature, the liquid-to-solid ratio, and the amount of water in the DES. To establish the accuracy of the developed method, certified reference materials such as DH-1a (U-Th ore), Sy-3 (Syenite rock), S-8 (Pitchblende) and CUP-1 (U-ore) were tested and the recovery was more than 97%. The relative standard deviation (RSD) among the replicates was found to be 3% or less. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was utilized for the quantification of uranium after it was dissolved in the DES. This method is an eco-friendly alternative for determining uranium in geological samples compared to conventional mineral acid decomposition methods.
