Evaluation of gross α and gross β activities in air particulate matter at Trombay, Mumbai

This study presents a comprehensive assessment of atmospheric particulate radioactivity in Trombay, Mumbai, conducted from 2016 to 2022. Particulate samples were collected using high volume samplers and analysed for gross α and β activities. Average activities were 0.19 ± 0.11 and 1.77 ± 0.86 mBq m−3, respectively. A positive correlation (r2 = 0.37; Spearman coefficient = 0.66) indicated common or related sources. The mean α/β ratio was 0.11 ± 0.05. Seasonal trends showed elevated activity in winter. However, no statistically significant change in average activity was observed over time. The findings suggest stable natural sources dominate atmospheric radioactivity, with variations influenced by seasonal and meteorological conditions.
