Occurrence, correlation and health implications of uranium and other potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in Himalayan springs

Access to clean and safe drinking water is a major public health concern in developing countries, critical for reducing waterborne diseases and achieving sustainable development. Groundwater, a primary drinking water source in India and globally, is increasingly contaminated by profound industrialization induced pollutants that contains potentially toxic elements (PTEs). In line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this study analyzed water samples from natural springs in the Yamuna Valley, Garhwal Himalaya, using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A statistical approach, principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to assess the distribution, correlation, and health impacts of these contaminants. Heavy metals like 137Ba, Cd, Pb, and Mo, detected with naturally occurring radioactive elements 238U, may be transported through gamma radiation, posing health risks to the local population. The chemical toxicity indices Lifetime Average Daily Dose (LADD) and Hazard Quotient (HQ) ranged from 0.0 to 0.67μg/kg/day, and 0.0 to 0.15 respectively.
