Investigation of radon and thoron exhalation patterns in soils of the Budhakedar region, Garhwal Himalayas

This study investigates the exhalation rates of radon and thoron from soil in the Budhakedar region of Tehri Garhwal, India, using a SMART RnDuo monitor. The average surface and mass exhalation rates of radon were 59.37 Bq m−2 h−1, and 149.28 mBq kg−1 h−1, while the average thoron surface exhalation rate was 1.97 Bq m−2 s−1 and mass emanation rate was 14.74 Bq kg−1 s−1, respectively. Higher exhalation rates were observed near the Central Crystalline Group, indicating geological influences. Radon exhalation showed greater variability, while thoron followed a symmetric distribution pattern across the region. This study also highlights the correlations and statistical distributions of the exhalation rates.
