Investigation of 210Pb and 226Ra as indicators of 222Rn leakage in oil refinery operations

Natural radionuclides in the oil industry have been recognized for decades, especially 222Rn from internal pipe scaling processes. At the Abreu e Lima refinery in Pernambuco, 226Ra and its descendant, 210Pb, were monitored to detect radon leaks. A pre-operational survey at the Suape Industrial Port Complex in Brazil detected elevated levels in soils of 210Pb (40.8–622.9 Bq kg⁻1) and 226Ra (5.52 -150.5 Bq kg⁻1) and in sediments of 210Pb (121.4–284.9 Bq kg⁻1) and 226Ra (13.8–55.3 Bq kg⁻1). The observed isotopic ratio indicates excess radiogenic lead, confirming anthropogenic interference and validating isotopic analysis for environmental monitoring.
