摘要

The promotion of digital innovation has recently garnered significant attention, yet the research systematically examining the antecedents of digital innovation, specifically in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), remains limited, despite substantial differences between SMEs and large firms. Taking the awareness–motivation–capability perspective, this study explores the role of professional connections in fostering digital innovation in SMEs, as well as the moderating effects of industry competition and slack resources. Using publicly available data from Chinese enterprises, our findings indicate that (1) professional connections positively influence SMEs' digital innovation by increasing the amount of digital attention, (2) industry competition weakens the relationship between digital attention and digital innovation, and (3) slack resources amplify the impact of digital attention on digital innovation. This study contributes valuable insights to the digital innovation literature and offers practical implications for SME innovation strategies.
