RELIGIOUS Exposure and Concern for Others’ Health: Religious Priming Promotes Health-Oriented Altruism in Nonreligious Individuals Through Awe in China
摘要
Although the relationship between religion and health is well-studied, religious effects on health-oriented altruism are less understood, especially in secular populations. This research examines whether religious priming increases concern for others’ health among nonreligious individuals, measured by donations to needy patients. Across three experiments with explicit, implicit, and contextual priming, findings reveal that religious exposure increased health-oriented donations, mediated by awe. Considering the social function of altruism and awe, our findings suggest the potential of religion to promote the health of individuals, others, and societies, pointing to a new direction in religion psychology amid rising secularization.
