Enhanced photocatalytic activity of spherical TiO2 inverse opal photonic crystals decorated by Ag nanoparticles

The materials with three-dimensional periodic ordered macroporous structure plays an important role in the field of photocatalysis. In this study, Ag nanoparticle-decorated spherical TiO2 inverse opal photonic crystals have been successfully prepared through the combination of the extraction-assisted micro-emulsion self-assembly and the wet-chemical method. After the decoration by Ag nanoparticles, the TiO2 still maintains a spherical inverse opal microstructure and exhibits a reduced band gap width. The experimental results show that the Ag-decorated TiO2 inverse opals have an improved photocatalytic activity compared to the pristine TiO2 inverse opals. The photodegradation rate of methylene blue (MB) over the Ag-decorated TiO2 inverse opals can reach 93.10% with the first-order reaction rate constant of 0.0463 min− 1. Moreover, the photoelectrochemical performance of the samples confirms that the decoration of Ag nanoparticles can also effectively inhibit the recombination of photogenerated charges carries during the photocatalytic process.
